The Government of Maldives has undertaken a project to establish and expand urban centers at selected islands across the country. These locations have been selected by the Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure.  The main purpose of this project is to provide and create sustainable development opportunities for various regions across the country.

The islands which have been selected for dredging and reclamation through financing by HDC are;

    • – K. Maafushi, (proposed reclamation area = 30.37 HA)
    • – K. Guraidhoo, (reclamation area = 15 HA)
    • – Dh. Kudahuvadhoo, (proposed reclamation area = 65 HA)
    • – Dh. Meedhoo, (proposed reclamation area = 15.0 HA)

An agreement has been signed between Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure and Housing Development Corporation to finance and undertake the Dredging, Reclamation and Shore Protection for these islands.

This project will be financed from the income generated through the housing units developed in Hulhumalé

In Addition, the MOU signed for the Dredging, Reclamation and Shore Protection for two other Islands (K. Thulusdhoo and Th. Guraidhoo) will also be undertaken by HDC. However, this project will be fully financed by the Government.

HDC is currently formulating a procedure on how to proceed with selection of contractors for implementation of these projects.
