Urban Farming – Cultivating Productive Green Spaces Amidst Urban Landscapes

August 29, 2023 : 7:00 pm

Today, we proudly announced the second Community Urban Farming project, building on the success of the Sustainable Economic Empowerment and Development for SMEs (SEEDS) as part of the Project for Developing Sustainable Agricultural Economy (PDSAE). This initiative aims to further strengthen local productivity of agricultural produce in the Maldives, enhancing food security in a region with limited arable land. It also seeks to encourage more entrepreneurs interested in venturing into the agricultural sector.

The second Community Urban Farming project invites residents of Hulhumalé to participate, offering affordable plot leases and essential fertilisers with the overarching goal of ensuring sustainable access to fresh vegetables and fruits for all community members. The project focuses on increasing agriculture production and promoting food security through entrepreneurial development amongst farmers, fostering a new generation of innovative, productive and environment-friendly agri-businesses.

Operating on a model of inclusivity, the project recognises the diverse needs and interests of the community. It provides three distinct categories for plot allocation, catering to specific demographics. Category 1 designates 50% of the plots exclusively for women, empowering and encouraging the active participation of women in urban farming. Category 2, dedicated to nurturing the youth and persons with disabilities (PWD), allocates 25% of plots to groups consisting of at least one youth and one PWD member. This provides them with a platform to learn and grow through agricultural endeavours. The third category allocates 25% of plots for the general community.

To enhance the urban farming experience, we are committed to providing a range of amenities to support participants in their agricultural pursuits. These include an on-site fertilizer shop, ensuring easy access to essential nutrients, access to various resources related to gardening and vegetation growth, and state-of-the-art hydroponic systems for efficient and resource-conscious cultivation.

The successful implementation of this Community Urban Farming project is expected to provide equitable and fair access spaces for community gardening and urban farming. It aims to offer access to organic fresh produce and contribute to the diversification of the agricultural sector through innovative farming models, maximising space utilisation in an urban environment by creating productive green spaces.
